Chennai, 4 June (H.S.): Chennai International Airport has taken a significant step towards addressing the issue of stray dogs on its premises by launching India's first stray dog management program. In collaboration with an animal welfare NGO, the airport authorities will provide 24-hour surveillance to ensure the safety of passengers and prevent any harm or abuse to the stray dogs. A dedicated dog safety and care center has been established within the airport premises, marking a first for any Indian airport.
The program involves continuous monitoring, humane capture, sterilization, vaccination, and care for the dogs. The team from the NGO will work in rotational shifts to ensure round-the-clock surveillance. This initiative aims to strike a balance between passenger safety and animal welfare. The airport had previously taken steps to manage the stray dog population, capturing around 40 dogs and administering anti-rabies vaccinations and sterilization surgeries. However, despite these efforts, the problem persisted, prompting the airport to launch this new program.
The stray dog issue had become a concern for passengers, airline staff, and security personnel, with many reporting instances of inconvenience and fear. The airport's decision to launch this program has been welcomed, and it is expected to improve the overall experience for travelers. Additionally, the airport has also introduced measures to control bird populations on the runway, using Thunderbolt booms to deter birds that could interfere with air traffic.
