Muzaffarnagar, 10 June (HS): Police
have detained the father and brother of a 23-year-old woman whose half-burned
body was discovered in a forest here, an officer said on Tuesday. He said
Saraswati Maliyan, who was found burnt on June 3, was the victim of an honor
killing. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjay Kumar informed reporters
that Saraswati's 55-year-old father, Rajvir Singh, and her 24-year-old brother,
Sumit Kumar, were arrested in connection with her death in Jadvad village. Throughout
the inquiry, both suspects admitted to strangling Saraswati to death. They stated that her dating choices harmed
the family's reputation, according to the officer. The two said they killed her
on May 29 and set her body on fire with fuel in a forest near a canal.
Saraswati had two weddings, one in
2019 and one in 2022, according to authorities, but both terminated. She eventually returned to her sweetheart,
against her family's wishes. Rajvir Singh and Sumit Kumar have been arrested
and charged under BNS sections 103 (murder) and 238 (causing the removal of
evidence of wrongdoing). Saraswati, an e-commerce business employee in
Gurugram, was living with a man from her village, according to authorities.
