Memari Double Murder Accused Behaves Erratically in Custody, Cites Religious Vow of Silence

Kolkata, 10 June (H.S.) -Humayun Kabir, a civil engineer accused of brutally murdering his parents in Memari, continues to display erratic and manipulative behavior in police custody, citing religious reasons for his actions. Sources in the Burdwan police confirmed that Kabir has been uncooperative and unpredictable during the investigation and court proceedings.

Police say Kabir has claimed to be observing a 62-day vow of silence “in accordance with Islam.” Despite this, he communicated with officers by writing notes and at times performing dramatic gestures, especially during the crime scene reconstruction. On Sunday night, he was taken to his family home in Memari’s Kashiarara Kazipara, where he enacted the murder of his parents using hand signals and written notes in English.

Upon reaching the scene, Kabir loudly chanted “Allahu Akbar” in an apparent attempt to gather a crowd. However, no local residents came forward despite the noise. Inside the house, he demonstrated how he attacked his father, Mustafizur Rahman, with a sharp weapon while he was asleep. When his mother, Momtaz Parvin, awoke to the noise, he assaulted her in the same manner. He then used an online-purchased knife to slit both their throats.

After committing the murders, Kabir dragged the bodies outside and used his mother’s nightgown to wipe the blood from his body. He also used the same cloth to clean the crime scene and then left it in the bathroom before fleeing.

Kabir was arrested days later in Bongaon after he reportedly attacked several people at a local madrasa with a knife. He was initially held at Dum Dum Correctional Home and later produced in Burdwan court on June 5, which ordered him into seven-day police custody. However, he was presented again in court on Monday, two days before the remand was set to expire.

During the court hearing and while being transferred to the central correctional facility, Kabir reportedly assaulted police and correctional staff. The behavior has raised concerns among authorities, though preliminary medical evaluations have not flagged any psychological abnormalities, according to police sources.

Kabir allegedly told investigators that he murdered his parents because they had deviated from the path of Islam. He also stated that he would have killed anyone else present in the house that day. After the reconstruction, he prayed at the location where the bodies were disposed, telling officers he fears no one but Allah and accepts death if it comes, as “this life belongs to Allah.”

Police claim they have gathered sufficient evidence during the five-day remand to proceed with a custody trial. Eastern Burdwan’s Additional SP (Sadar) Arka Bandyopadhyay stated, “We have taken all necessary steps in the investigation. Based on the evidence, we will ensure that he is tried and punished appropriately.”

Kabir has now been remanded to judicial custody and will be presented in court again on June 23.
