New Delhi, June 10 (HS): The fire on the Singapore-flagged container ship Wan Hai 503 in the Arabian Sea has intensified, but the Coast Guard and Indian Navy have brought the fire under control. The ship is tilted about 10-15 degrees, and containers are falling into the water. Explosions are continuously occurring from the central part of the ship to the front, with ICG ship Samarth and a rescue team being deployed from Kochi. ICG Commander Amit Uniyal said Coast Guard ships Samudra Prahari and Sachet were engaged in firefighting operations. visible flames have reduced and thick smoke is coming out. The Indian Navy, Coast Guard, DG Shipping, and other stakeholders carried out search and rescue operations. The ship is tilted about 10-15 degrees from the port, and there have been reports of more containers falling on the ship. The ship was carrying 22 crew members.
The Indian Navy immediately deployed INS Surat and a Dornier aircraft to provide necessary assistance after receiving information about the fire onboard the Singapore container vessel. At about 16.30 hrs, naval personnel of the Surat ship rescued 18 out of 22 crew members safely. The rescued crew includes 14 Chinese and 4 Taiwanese nationals. Four crew members, including two Taiwanese, one Indonesian, and one from Myanmar, were missing at the time of the explosion. Dornier aircraft of the ICG have been deployed for surveillance over the ship, and the injured were given first aid.
