Oslo (Norway), May 28 (H.S.):
A massive cargo ship, the NCL Saltin, measuring 443 feet, came dangerously close to a house in Norway due to a Ukrainian sailor falling asleep while on duty. Responding to alerts, rescue workers successfully maneuvered the vessel back into the water within 30 minutes. Norwegian police have since charged the 30-year-old sailor with reckless navigation. The incident, which gained international attention, occurred in Byneset, a suburb of Trondheim. Johan Helberg, the homeowner, confirmed that the ship was just meters away from his home and expressed relief that no one was injured, despite damage to the heating pipe in his cabin. He was alerted by a neighbor and cited the possible catastrophic outcome if the ship had crashed into nearby rocks. The sailor claimed the ship's alarms failed, prompting further investigation into his compliance with navigation and rest regulations. All 16 crew members were reported safe, and Bente Hetland, CEO of the owning company, noted that this vessel has previously run aground twice, once in Hadsell in 2023 and again in Ålesund in 2024. Helberg, a retired museum director, remarked on the occasional passage of large ships near his residence.
