Dhaka, May 28 (HS): ATM Azharul Islam, a leader of Jamaat-e-Islami in Bangladesh, was released from jail today after 14 years, expressing happiness at regaining his freedom. His imprisonment was tied to crimes against humanity during the 1971 liberation war. Following a lengthy legal battle, the Supreme Court acquitted him of the charges just a day before his release, which occurred at approximately 9:15 AM at Bangladesh Medical University after authorities completed necessary procedures.
Immediately following his release, he participated in a rally at Shahbagh intersection, declaring, I am now free. I am a free citizen of a free country. He expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court, his legal team, and supporters, particularly highlighting the contributions of students and members of the army during the July uprising. Islam also called for an investigation into the deaths of Jamaat leaders while in custody, advocating for justice for those responsible. Notably, the Supreme Court's recent ruling annulled its prior decision that upheld his death sentence from the International Crimes Tribunal. The court acknowledged errors in its previous evaluation of the evidence, instructing his immediate release unless he faced charges in another case.
