Prayagraj,

26 Feb (HS): A sanitation worker engaged in Mahakumbh severely injured himself

by making multiple cuts on his neck with a knife. In critical condition, he was

immediately transferred from the Mahakumbh hospital to the trauma center of

Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital, where senior surgeon Dr. Vikash Sachdeva and his

team successfully repaired his trachea and esophagus after a complex

four-hour-long surgery.

Dr.

Vikash Sachdeva was assisted in this complex surgery by senior ENT specialist

Dr. Sankalp Kesari, junior residents Dr. Harshit Gautam, Dr. Yogesh Verma, Dr.

Srishti, and Dr. Gaurav. The anesthesia team, led by Dr. Pragati Saxena and Dr.

Anil Singh, ensured the patient’s safety throughout the procedure.

Phoolchand,

son of Acchelal, a resident of Naraini, Kartal in Banda district, was working

as a sanitation worker in Mahakumbh. He was on duty in Sector 21 when, on

February 26, he went to the restroom and injured himself with a knife. His

brother, Gorelal, stated that Phoolchand had been suffering from mental health

issues and was undergoing treatment.

Phoolchand

has four daughters and one son. He had been working as a sanitation worker at

Mahakumbh since January. Following the surgery, he was shifted to the

anesthesia ICU under the supervision of Dr. Dharmendra Yadav, where his condition

remains critical but stable. Dr. Vikash Sachdeva, Professor and Head of the

Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Motilal Nehru Medical College, stated:

The

patient's trachea and esophagus were severely cut, posing a life-threatening

situation. We initially restored his breathing by inserting a tube in an

emergency and then performed a complex surgery to reconnect both tubes. The

surgery was successful, but his condition remains critical. He is currently

under observation in the anesthesia ICU.

Dr.

Vatsala Misra, Principal of Motilal Nehru Medical College, said: This was

a serious case, where our expert team responded promptly to save the patient’s

life. Timely medical intervention is crucial in such situations. Our hospital’s

medical team has done an excellent job, and the patient’s condition is being

continuously monitored.
