New Delhi, February 24 (HS): International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah congratulated India's legendary batsman Virat Kohli on scoring his 51st One Day International (ODI) century and completing 14000 runs in the 50-over format.
Kohli completed 14,000 runs in ODI cricket during the ICC Champions Trophy match against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday, becoming only the third cricketer to do so.
Jay Shah took to his official social media handle and praised Kohli's cover drive that took him to the 14000 milestone.
He wrote on X, Congratulations to Virat Kohli on crossing 14,000 ODI runs during the Champions Trophy match against Pakistan in Dubai and what a great cover drive to reach the milestone.
Kohli scored an unbeaten 100 off 111 balls with the help of seven fours, which was truly a treat to watch. His innings came at a strike rate of 90.09, helping India easily chase down Pakistan's score of 241 runs. This was Kohli's sixth century in ICC ODIs and his first in the ICC Champions Trophy.
He is the third batsman to achieve this feat after Sachin Tendulkar (18,426 runs in 463 ODIs) and Kumar Sangakkara (14,234 runs in 404 matches). In 299 ODIs, Kohli has scored 14,085 runs with 51 centuries and 73 half-centuries at an average of 58.20.
In the India-Pakistan Champions Trophy match, Pakistan won the toss and decided to bat first. Pakistan got off to a good start with Babar Azam (23 off 26 balls with five fours) hitting some excellent drives in a 41-run opening partnership.
From here, thanks to the innings of captain Mohammad Rizwan (46 off 77 balls with three fours), Khushdil Shah (38 off 39 balls with two sixes), Salman Agha (19) and Naseem Shah (14), Pakistan were all out for 241 in 49.4 overs.
Chasing 242, India lost the wicket of captain Rohit Sharma (20 off 15 balls with three fours and a six) early.
After this, a 69-run partnership between Shubman Gill (46 runs in 52 balls, with the help of seven fours) and Virat Kohli (100* runs in 111 balls, with the help of seven fours) and then a 114-run partnership between Virat and Iyer (56 runs in 67 balls, with the help of five fours and a six) helped India win easily by four wickets with six wickets in hand and 45 balls remaining.
