New Delhi, 20 February (HS): The Delhi High Court has disposed of the SIT's plea challenging the bail granted by the trial court in 2022 to Sajjan Kumar, who was convicted in a Saraswati Vihar case during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The court noted the SIT's argument that Sajjan Kumar has been convicted by the trial court in this case and he has been formally taken into custody in this case.

On February 12, the Rouse Avenue Court convicted Sajjan Kumar. In this case, both the SIT and the complainant in this case have demanded death penalty for Sajjan Kumar.

The case dates back to 01 November 1984 in which Sardar Jaswant Singh and Sardar Tarun Deep Singh were murdered in Raj Nagar, West Delhi. At around 4-4.30 pm, a mob of rioters attacked the victims' house in Raj Nagar area with iron rods and sticks. According to the complainants, this mob was led by Sajjan Kumar, who was then a Congress MP from Outer Delhi Lok Sabha seat.

According to the complaint, Sajjan Kumar incited the mob to attack, after which the mob burnt Sardar Jaswant Singh and Sardar Tarun Deep Singh alive. The mob vandalised, looted and set fire to the victims' house. An FIR was registered at Saraswati Vihar police station in North district on the basis of an affidavit given by the complainant before the then inquiry commission headed by Ranganath Mishra. The FIR alleged charges under sections 147, 148, 149, 395, 397, 302, 307, 436 and 440 of the Indian Penal Code.
