New Delhi, February 20 (HS): The Ministry of Defense on Thursday signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to purchase 149 software defined radios for the Indian Coast Guard. 149 software defined radios will be purchased from Bengaluru-based company BEL at a total cost of Rs 1220.12 crore.

These state-of-the-art radios will exchange secure and reliable information through high-speed data and secure voice communications. This will strengthen the Indian Coast Guard's ability to carry out its core responsibilities including maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, fisheries protection and marine environmental protection. Additionally, these radios will enhance interoperability for joint operations with the Indian Navy.

According to the Ministry of Defence, this project is a strategic step towards enhancing the operational capabilities of the Coast Guard and supporting the Blue Economy objectives of the Government of India by strengthening maritime security. In sync with the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, this contract will enhance the country's manufacturing capabilities for advanced military-grade communication systems. It will also create employment opportunities and promote expertise development
