NEW DELHI, 19 February (H.S.) :
There is big turmoil going
regarding JNUSU election, Notification for JNU Students Union elections can be
issued only after the instructions of the High Court, Joint Secretary made this
allegation.
Students Union (JNUSU)
elections will be held based on the instructions of the High Court, last year it
was also observed. In the elections held last year, a former Supreme Court
Justice was appointed as an observer by the High Court. After the elections, he
raised objections to the recommendations of the Grievance Redressal Committee
(GRC) and the Lyngdoh Committee. Now a petition has been filed in the High
Court on behalf of JNU. The instructions of the High Court are being awaited.
The admission process in JNU has been completed and the notification for the
elections has not been issued yet. Student union elections are conducted 6 to 8
weeks after the completion of the admission process.
The admission process was
completed on February 4. But, due to the matter is pending to the High Court,
the notification is not being issued. Regarding the notification, a few
students under the leadership of the Student Union officials protested at the
office of Dean of Student Welfare (DOS) Prof. Manuradha Chaudhary. They
demanded to issue the notification as soon as possible. JNUSU Joint Secretary
Mohammad Sajid said that DOS has taken note of the High Court's instructions
and has asked us to wait for two weeks. He said that if the notification is not
issued soon, there will be agitation because after the notification is issued,
University General Body Meeting (UGBM) will have to be held. After this an
election committee will be formed and then elections can be held. DOS Prof.
Manuradha Chaudhary said that last year the court appointed observer had raised
objections. After this we have filed a petition in the High Court and are
waiting for their instructions. Election notification can be issued only after
the objections are resolved.
Even before the elections,
conflicts between student union groups started in the university. Due to
non-issue of election notification, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)
and other students have given a call for UGBM on 24th February. On the other
hand, JNUSU has called it illegal. ABVP's JNU unit secretary Shikha Swaraj said
that JNUSU was not taking any initiative for the elections, hence in the
interest of the students we decided to conduct UGBM. On the other hand, JNUSU
Joint Secretary Sajid said that students can call for UGBM, but for that,
signatures of 10 percent students are required. This has to be given to the
Secretary of the Student Union and he can give consent to the UGBM only after
taking permission from the President. In such a situation, the call of UGBM is
illegal.
