Recruitment Scam: ‘Kalighat’s Kaku’ Sujay Krishna Bhadra Granted Interim Bail by High Court, Likely to be Released Soon

Kolkata, 18 February (H.S.) – Sujay Krishna Bhadra, popularly known as ‘Kalighat’s Kaku,’ who was arrested in the high-profile recruitment scam in West Bengal, has been granted interim bail by the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday. Considering his deteriorating health condition, the court ruled in his favor, making his release from jail likely soon. However, the relief has been granted with several conditions.

A division bench comprising Justice Arijit Banerjee and Justice Apurba Sinha Ray noted that Bhadra’s health is critical, justifying the decision to grant him bail under strict conditions. As per the court’s order, he will only be allowed to travel between his home and the hospital, with no permission to visit any other location. Central security forces will be deployed at his residence at all times. Additionally, he must provide the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with details of the two mobile numbers he uses. If he requires any surgical procedure during this period, he is permitted to undergo treatment. The court has also made it clear that he must fully cooperate with the CBI investigation. His bail is valid until the last week of March.

Bhadra had previously been granted bail in the Enforcement Directorate (ED) case, but his release was blocked after the CBI filed a fresh case against him using the ‘shown arrest’ procedure. Meanwhile, he had also been hospitalized due to deteriorating health conditions.

Investigating agencies probing the recruitment scam have collected voice samples from Bhadra, which are currently under analysis. Amid these legal proceedings, he filed a bail petition citing medical grounds. In response, the High Court sought his medical reports from the CBI and, after reviewing all aspects, approved his interim bail with conditions. His release is now expected once the legal formalities are completed.
