Kolkata, 18 February (H.S.) – A privilege motion was introduced in the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday against Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. Agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay moved the motion, accusing Adhikari of displaying unruly behavior in the House and misleading the media regarding his suspension.
On Monday, Adhikari was suspended from the Assembly for a month. In protest, BJP legislators staged a demonstration on the staircase of the Assembly chamber.
Speaker Biman Banerjee accepted the privilege motion and issued a notice to Suvendu Adhikari. Reacting to this, Adhikari said, I am enjoying their fear. He further pointed out that this was the fifth privilege notice issued against him since 2021 and that he had already faced suspension four times. No matter how many notices the government sends, they cannot stop me from speaking the truth, he asserted.
Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay justified Adhikari’s suspension, citing his indisciplined behavior, which allegedly included throwing papers towards the Speaker's chair. However, Chattopadhyay criticized Adhikari for later telling the media that he was suspended for speaking in favor of Hindus, calling it a completely false and misleading statement. He emphasized that such statements should be condemned.
