Night Curfew Enforced Along Indo-Bangla Border in Assam’s Cachar district

Cachar (Assam), 18 February (HS): The administration of Assam’s Cachar district has enforced a night curfew along the India-Bangladesh border, aiming to curb extremist movement and prevent smuggling, an official release stated on Tuesday.

To uphold public order and tackle illegal activities, Cachar District Magistrate Mridul Yadav issued an order imposing strict restrictions in the border area.

Citing concerns over potential law and order issues, the directive—enforced under Section 163 of BNSS—seeks to prevent the infiltration of extremist elements and unauthorized transport of commodities and cattle.

Emphasizing the urgency of preventive measures, the district magistrate stressed the necessity of swift action to maintain regional peace and security.

According to the order, night-time movement is strictly prohibited within a one-kilometre area along the border from sunset to sunrise. This restriction, which remains in effect for two months unless otherwise revised, is designed to suppress illicit cross-border activities.

Additionally, all movement in the river Surma and its high banks within Cachar’s Indian territory is banned during night hours. Fishing is also restricted, except for local residents who obtain prior approval from the circle officer of Katigorah along with the lessee’s authorization.

To combat unauthorized transport of essential commodities, the order bars the movement of sugar, rice, wheat, edible oil, and salt by any means—vehicles, carts, or rickshaws—within a five-kilometre stretch along the border from sunset to sunrise. However, special permits may be issued by the Katigorah circle officer after verifying the purpose and securing clearance from local supply officials.

State and central government employees on duty are exempted from these restrictions.
