Report Sought From Jail Authorities After Undertrial Escapes From Hooghly Correctional Home

Kolkata, 08 December (H.S.): An undertrial prisoner arrested in a POCSO case escaped from the Srirampur Subsidiary Correctional Home in Hooghly district, triggering alarm across the administration. Following the incident, senior officials have demanded a detailed report on the security lapses, while police have intensified the search for the accused.

The escape came to light on Sunday morning during the routine cell count, when jail staff discovered that the undertrial had vanished from his cell. Preliminary information suggests that he scaled the correctional home’s boundary wall to flee. Treating the matter with utmost seriousness, the jail administration has sought a comprehensive report from the superintendent of the facility.

Srirampur Sub-Divisional Officer Shambhudweep Sarkar said on Monday that a detailed report has been requested from the superintendent, and an inquiry has already begun based on the initial findings. He confirmed that the prisoner’s disappearance was noticed on Sunday, after which the police immediately launched a search operation.

Officials added that the process of issuing a lookout notice is underway to trace and apprehend the accused. Meanwhile, security across the district has been tightened, and a thorough review of the correctional home’s safety measures is being carried out to prevent any recurrence.
