Chennai, 8 December (H.S.) : In a major boost for the industrial landscape of South Tamil Nadu, the global shipping giant HD Hyundai has chosen the state to establish a massive, world-class shipbuilding cluster. The Government of Tamil Nadu has signed a preliminary agreement with the South Korean conglomerate to proceed with the shipyard project in Thoothukudi.
The decision was made after HD Hyundai evaluated several Indian states and ultimately cited Tamil Nadu’s clear policy roadmap, efficient coordination, and robust coastal ecosystem as deciding factors. According to a statement from Industries Minister Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa's office, this step reflects the confidence that global industry leaders place in the state's economic stability and vision.
Thoothukudi was specifically selected due to its suitable climatic conditions, which are similar to HD Hyundai's base in Ulsan, South Korea, as well as its existing industrial presence and port infrastructure. The project is expected to have significant economic ripple effects, given that shipbuilding is a labor-intensive sector with a high employment multiplier—where one direct job supports nearly six total jobs across ancillary industries.
This partnership, which aligns with India’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 to become a top-five shipbuilding nation, positions Tamil Nadu as a decisive frontrunner in the country's maritime manufacturing resurgence.
