Puducherry buzzing with New Year tourists amid traffic woes

Chennai, 28 December (H.S.) : The former French colony of Puducherry is witnessing a massive surge in tourist footfall as the coastal town prepares for New Year celebrations. With just a few days remaining for the year to end, visitors from across the country have flocked to the Union Territory, leaving hotels and restaurants packed to capacity. Local hoteliers have noted that the influx of travelers this year has significantly exceeded previous records, with crowds drawn to the unique Franco Tamil architecture and the scenic beachfront.

However, the heavy arrival of cars and vans has led to severe traffic congestion on all major roads. Motorists are facing immense challenges navigating the narrow streets, while two wheeler riders struggle for space amidst the gridlock. Authorities stated that indiscriminate roadside parking has exacerbated the chaos, making it difficult for local residents and sanitary workers to carry out their daily routines. The situation has been further complicated by the scheduled visits of high profile dignitaries, including Union ministers, for various local events.

Vice President of India C P Radhakrishnan is expected to arrive on Monday to attend the annual convocation at Pondicherry Central University. In preparation for the peak celebrations, the local administration has implemented several measures to manage the crowds at temples and popular public spots. Hotels have organized special programs, and roadside eateries are thriving as tourists enjoy dining in the open air.

Official sources confirmed that additional police personnel have been deployed to monitor traffic and ensure the smooth execution of all planned festivities across the city.
