Kamrup (Assam), 28 December (HS): Police resorted to firing during an operation against cattle smugglers in the Baihata area, leading to the arrest of three suspected smugglers, officials said on Sunday.

According to police, the incident occurred when a team attempted to intercept a vehicle suspected to be involved in illegal cattle transportation. The suspects allegedly tried to flee, prompting the police to open fire to bring the situation under control. No injuries were reported in the firing.

Police arrested three cattle smugglers from the spot and seized the vehicle used for transporting the cattle. Several objectionable documents were also recovered during the operation.

Further investigation is underway to ascertain the wider network involved in cattle smuggling in the region, police added.
