
Lakhimpur (Assam), 28 December (HS): Tension prevailed in Bongalmora area of Lakhimpur district after a mob attacked police personnel and forcibly freed a fake gold trader who had been detained by the police on Sunday.
According to the police sources, the incident occurred when a team from Bongalmora police outpost detained a suspected fake gold trader identified as Baharul, for alleged involvement in trading counterfeit gold. As the police attempted to take him into custody, hundreds of local people gathered at the spot and intervened to shield the accused.
The situation soon escalated as the mob turned violent and attacked the police team, assaulting personnel and damaging vehicles. Taking advantage of the chaos, the mob managed to forcibly rescue the accused from police custody.
In the attack, Officer-in-Charge of Bongalmora police outpost, Gokul Jayashree, sustained serious injuries. A police driver was also injured in the incident. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Senior police officials have rushed to the area and additional forces have been deployed to restore law and order. An investigation has been launched to identify those involved in the attack and police said strict action will be taken against all responsible for assaulting law enforcement personnel.------
