Chennai, 27 December (H.S.) : A woman functionary of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) named Ajitha Agnel, who was undergoing medical treatment after an attempt to end her life, was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on Saturday. Medical sources confirmed that her health condition deteriorated significantly, necessitating specialized care at a private hospital.
The incident was triggered by internal party developments involving the appointment of office bearers. Ajitha Agnel was reportedly deeply distressed after being denied the position of Thoothukudi Central district secretary. Following the appointment of Samuel Raj to the post on December 23, she openly expressed her dissatisfaction, alleging that the new appointee had not been active in party duties. She maintained that her consistent dedication to the organization made her the rightful candidate for the leadership role.
The situation escalated when Ajitha and her supporters organized a protest at the party headquarters in Panaiyur. During this demonstration, they reportedly intercepted the car of party chief Vijay and staged a dharna outside the office premises to voice their grievances. According to reports, she consumed approximately 15 sleeping pills at her residence on Thursday, after which family members rushed her to the hospital.
Authorities and party representatives have been monitoring the situation as news of her worsening health spread. Police officials are looking into the circumstances surrounding the extreme step, while hospital staff continue to provide intensive medical support.
The party leadership has not issued an official statement regarding the specific demands raised during the protest or the subsequent health crisis of the functionary.
