Guwahati, 27 December (HS): Sounding the poll bugle for the 2026 Assembly elections, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday delivered a strong address at the BJP state executive meeting held at Srimant Shankardev Kalakshetra International Auditorium, focusing on Assam’s cultural identity, demographic changes and the party’s electoral outlook.

The Chief Minister asserted that Assam is the land of Shankar and Madhav and rejected the notion of “Shankar–Azan,” questioning how the term entered the state’s discourse. He also described Bagh Hazarika as a fictional character, alleging that attempts are being made to distort Assam’s historical and cultural narrative.

Raising concerns over demographic trends, Dr Sarma claimed that as per projections linked to the 2027 census report, the population of Miya Muslims of Bangladeshi origin in Assam could rise to around 40%. He alleged that people from Bangladesh have settled in the strategically sensitive “Chicken Neck” area and posed the question of which side they would support in the event of a war.

Describing elections in Assam as a struggle for survival, the Chief Minister said that every election is a fight for civilisation and existence. He remarked that it is meaningless to debate who becomes a minister or MLA, stressing that the larger objective is the protection of the state’s indigenous identity.

Dr Sarma further stated that Assamese society is gradually retreating from areas such as Dhubri, Dalgaon and Naoboicha. Referring to past political developments, he said that “the chair taken away from Sadullah has been returned to Sadullah,” calling it a serious warning for the state.

Concluding his address, the Chief Minister said that victory is essential for the welfare of the nation and indigenous communities and urged party workers to unite and ensure a decisive BJP win in the 2026 Assembly elections.

The left-wing has been constantly plotting to weaken our country. Talk about the revolution in Nepal, but also show the live telecast of what happened after the Nepal Revolution. That revolution is not a revolution if it does not end with the welfare of the people.

There is not a single country in the world where the original population has dropped below 60%, and we have seen the number of people of Bangladeshi origin rapidly increasing, crossing 40%. Therefore, demographic change is our main challenge.---------------
