Chennai, 19 December (H.S.) Health Minister Ma Subramanian presided over a felicitation ceremony at the Omandurar Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital to celebrate the successful completion of 20,000 interventional cardiology procedures and 500 robotic surgeries.
Addressing the media on Friday, the minister highlighted that these milestones were achieved over the past four and a half years, showcasing the hospital’s emergence as a premier healthcare facility. He noted that the advanced robotic surgery system, installed at a cost of over 34 crore rupees, provides precision through 3D visualization and is unique to this government institution in India.
Authorities from the health department stated that treatments which cost up to 20 lakh rupees in private hospitals are being provided free of charge to the underprivileged at Omandurar Hospital. The cardiology department, established in 2024, now serves around 600 to 700 patients daily, particularly as post-pandemic cardiac complications have risen.
The minister specifically mentioned a world-first complex aortic repair performed on a 73-year-old patient using a shoulder-access device. Furthermore, a new dedicated treatment wing for sportspersons, constructed at a cost of 7.70 crore rupees, is set to be inaugurated soon by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.
Regarding medical education, the minister confirmed that 50 vacant seats in medical and dental colleges would be filled through a special counseling round scheduled between December 20 and 25. He also addressed the concerns of contract nurses, stating that the government has regularized 3,783 nurses so far and will continue the process as vacancies arise based on seniority.
He assured that the administration has no intention of neglecting healthcare workers and remains open to dialogue. Officials concluded that the hospital's growth from handling 700 outpatients to 2,500 daily reflects the public's trust in the high-quality, comprehensive care provided by the state government
