Chennai, 16 December (H.S.) : In a strategic move to bolster urban security and neutralize emerging aerial threats, the Tamil Nadu police are preparing to acquire advanced handheld anti-drone guns, according to a recent report.
The decision comes in response to the growing risk posed by unauthorized drones, particularly during VIP movements and large public events. The new handheld equipment is designed for rapid, portable deployment and is expected to weigh less than six kilograms. Its primary function is to swiftly neutralize unauthorized Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) by disrupting their control and navigation systems.
Key Features of the New System: Jamming Capability: The gun works by jamming all standard remote-control and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) frequencies, immediately cutting the operator's video feed. Target Neutralization: Upon engagement, the drone is forced into a safe failure mode, causing it to either land on the spot, hover, or return to its point of origin. Officials state the system can defeat a target within 10 seconds. Range and Durability: The equipment promises a jamming range of at least 1 km and is built to endure harsh environments, capable of operating between -20°C and 50°C. Continuous Operation: Powered by lithium batteries, it guarantees a minimum of one hour of continuous operation.
Complementing the anti-drone gun, the police will also procure a handheld detector. This device uses passive radio frequency scanning to silently identify drones at distances of 3 km or more and can track up to 10 targets simultaneously, aiming to detect 99% of commercial, off-the-shelf drone models.
This procurement marks a significant focus on a layered counter-drone strategy for urban security across the state.
