Bhubaneswar, 16 December (H.S.) : Notorious criminal Kamalakanta Das, alias Budhia, sustained serious injuries in a police encounter in Bhadrak district early Tuesday morning, police said.

Confirming the incident, Town Police Station Inspector Prabhanshu Mishra stated that Budhia, who is involved in more than 14 criminal cases including robbery and firing incidents, was intercepted following a tip-off about his presence near the Charampa Malgodown area.

According to police, Budhia opened fire at the police team during the operation, forcing them to retaliate. While Budhia was injured in the exchange of fire, one of his accomplices managed to flee the spot on a motorcycle.

Police recovered firearms and other incriminating materials from the encounter site. After sustaining injuries, Budhia was initially taken to the District Headquarters Hospital and was later referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced treatment.
