Three found guilty in Panihati councillor murder

North 24 Paragnas, 15 December (H.S.): Three accused have been found guilty by the court in the murder case of Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor of Panihati Anupam Dutta. On Monday, Barrackpore court convicted the three accused, Sanjeev alias Bapi Pandit, Amit Pandit, and Jiarul Mandal.

On March 13, 2022, Anupam was shot while sitting on his scooter near his home on Agarpara Station Road. A miscreant shot him at close range. The then Trinamool Congress councillor of Ward No. 8 of Panihati Municipality died on the spot.

The police arrested Amit that same night. Later, Bapi and Jiarul were arrested. Bapi was later granted bail. He was present in court on Monday. Following the judge's order, he was re-arrested from the court premises.

During the investigation into Anupam's murder, officials of Barrackpore Police Commissionerate found that Bapi had given the contract for the murder. It was also revealed that another criminal had been given the contract to kill Anupam, but that person did not carry out the task. Therefore, Amit was hired after the municipal elections.

Later, Bapi was granted bail by the Calcutta High Court. This had caused an uproar in the area. Finally, all three accused, including Bapi, have been found guilty by the court. The sentencing of the three will be announced on December 17.

While being taken out of the court, Bapi said, I have been politically framed. Leaders are involved in this.

On the other hand, Anupam's wife, Meenakshi Dutta, who was present in court to hear the verdict in her husband's murder case, said, I am happy with this verdict. I hope the culprits will get appropriate punishment. I am grateful to everyone.

The sentencing of the three convicts will be announced on December 17. This case remains a topic of discussion in local political circles.
