New Delhi, 10 December (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid heartfelt tribute to the martyrs of the historic Assam Movement on the occasion of Swahid Diwas (Martyrs’ Day), recalling their courage and lifelong commitment to protecting the state’s identity and cultural heritage.
In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister said the Assam Movement continues to inspire generations and holds a place of lasting pride in India’s democratic history. He reaffirmed the government’s resolve to realize the aspirations of those who led and participated in the movement—strengthening Assam’s cultural fabric and ensuring holistic growth across the state.
“Today, on Swahid Diwas, we recall the valour of all those who were a part of the Assam Movement,” Modi stated in his post. “The Movement will always have a prime place in our history. We reiterate our commitment to fulfilling the dreams of those who participated in the Assam Movement, notably the strengthening of Assam’s culture and the all-round progress of the state.”
In an Assamese-language message, the Prime Minister added that the sacrifices of those who took part in the movement remain a source of inspiration for future generations and that the government stands committed to fulfilling their vision of a culturally strong and developed Assam.
Swahid Diwas is observed annually on December 10 to honour the memory of those who laid down their lives during the Assam Movement, which sought the preservation of Assamese identity and rights from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. The day serves as a reminder of the movement’s role in shaping the state’s socio-political consciousness.
