New Delhi, 10 December (H.S.): The festival of lights, Diwali, has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, marking a proud and historic moment for India. The decision was taken on Wednesday during the ongoing 20th session of UNESCO, being held from December 8 to 13 at the Red Fort in New Delhi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated citizens on the recognition, describing Diwali as “the soul of Indian civilization.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he said, “Diwali is deeply rooted in our culture and traditions. It embodies the spirit of light and righteousness. Its inscription on UNESCO’s heritage list further enhances the festival’s global resonance.”

The inclusion was officially announced by UNESCO through an X post, acknowledging Diwali’s universal message of harmony, hope, and collective celebration.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also expressed delight over the announcement, noting that the recognition highlights Diwali’s profound cultural, spiritual, and unifying significance. “It stands as a testament to its timeless ability to bring people together across faiths and geographies,” he wrote.With this addition, India now has 15 cultural elements on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

These include the Kumbh Mela, Durga Puja of Kolkata, Garba of Gujarat, Yoga, Vedic Chanting Traditions, and Ramlila, among others.The recognition of Diwali, widely celebrated across India and the world, underscores the enduring global appeal of India’s spiritual and cultural traditions — illuminating not only homes but also hearts worldwide.
