On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined the nation in mourning, paying tribute to the legendary actor's immense contribution to cinema.

In a heartfelt message on the social media platform 'X', Prime Minister Modi expressed his sorrow, remembering Asrani as a uniquely talented performer. Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Govardhan Asrani Ji, the Prime Minister wrote .

A gifted entertainer and a truly versatile artist, he entertained audiences across generations. He particularly added joy and laughter to countless lives through his unforgettable performances. His contribution to Indian cinema will always be cherished. My condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti .

With a career spanning over five decades and more than 350 films, Asrani was a household name, celebrated for his impeccable comic timing and versatility. A graduate of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), he left an indelible mark on Indian cinema.

He is perhaps most famously remembered for his iconic role as the eccentric jailer in the 1975 classic Sholay, where his line, Hum Angrezon ke zamane ke jailer hain (I am a jailer from the British era), became legendary.

Beyond this role, Asrani showcased his acting prowess in a wide array of films, seamlessly shifting between comedic and serious characters in beloved movies such as Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke, Bawarchi, and Dhamaal. His passing marks the end of an era, leaving a void in the hearts of millions who grew up laughing with and admiring his work. Tributes from across the political and entertainment spectrum, including from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, have poured in, celebrating the life of an artist who brought unparalleled joy to the screen.
