New York, September 8 (H.S.): Top-seeded German Alexander Zverev defeated Italy’s Luciano Darderi in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2026 US Open. Zverev beat Darderi 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(7-3) in their fourth-round encounter played on Monday.
Competing on the court for the fourth consecutive night, the 29-year-old Zverev displayed an aggressive approach from the outset. He had already been involved in two five-set matches earlier in the tournament, but ensured that his contest against Darderi did not turn into another lengthy battle.
Despite facing pressure on his serve in the opening set, Zverev maintained excellent control and claimed it 6-2. In the second set, a poorly executed drop shot by 21st seed Darderi presented Zverev with another break opportunity, which the German converted. After establishing a 4-0 lead, Zverev went on to take the second set 6-2.
Darderi attempted to fight back in the third set. His powerful first serve and effective use of the drop shot troubled Zverev considerably, forcing the set into a tie-break. However, Zverev remained composed under pressure and won the tie-break 7-3 to seal the match.
With this victory, Zverev has become the only male player to reach the quarterfinals at all four Grand Slam tournaments this year. He will next face Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp for a place in the semifinals.
