Guwahati, 19 September (HS): In a move aimed at promoting peace and better coordination along the Assam-Nagaland border, Sarupathar MLA Biswajit Phukan and Bhandari MLA Achumbemo Kikon of Nagaland signed an agreement on Zubeen Divas.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between the two legislators, where they discussed ways to strengthen relations between communities residing on both sides of the inter-state boundary. The MLAs agreed that differences and local issues should be resolved through dialogue, mutual understanding and cooperation rather than confrontation.

A key proposal discussed during the meeting was the establishment of a ‘Zubeen Garg Nahor Udyan’ along the Assam-Nagaland border. The proposed park is intended to commemorate late singer Zubeen Garg and recognise his contribution to Assamese music and culture.

The peace and harmony agreement also proposes the formation of a Joint Peace and Coordination Committee to facilitate regular communication and coordination between the two sides. It envisages greater cooperation in maintaining peace in border areas and strengthening people-to-people relations.

The two legislators also discussed promoting lawful trade and economic activities in the border region. Greater coordination, they said, would help local residents pursue their livelihoods and conduct economic activities within the legal framework.

Cultural exchanges and stronger social ties between communities were also part of the discussions. The proposed Zubeen Garg Nahor Udyan was viewed as an initiative that could further highlight the cultural connections shared by people living in Assam and Nagaland.

The meeting was held as part of Zubeen Divas, observed in memory of singer Zubeen Garg. The agreement seeks to create a framework for sustained dialogue, cooperation and cultural engagement among communities along the Assam-Nagaland border.
