Bengaluru, 17 September (H.S.): Rainfall has intensified across Karnataka after a lull of nearly six weeks, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting continued showers in Bengaluru and several other districts on Thursday.

The southwest monsoon has become active over the State, bringing the possibility of heavy rain to parts of southern interior Karnataka. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also expected at isolated places.

A yellow alert has been issued for 13 districts - Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagara, Mandya, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Hassan, Kodagu, Tumakuru, Shivamogga and Vijayanagara.

Several areas in these districts are likely to receive moderate rainfall, while isolated locations may experience heavier spells. Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph are also possible during periods of rain.

Bengaluru, which has been receiving rainfall for the past three days, is expected to remain generally cloudy on Thursday. Brief periods of sunshine may occur during the morning before cloud cover increases. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely during the evening or night, while intermittent showers could continue through the night.

Heavy rain has lashed Bengaluru and neighbouring areas over the past two days. Some parts of Ramanagara and Mandya districts recorded more than 100 mm of rainfall, indicating a marked revival of monsoon activity in southern Karnataka.

The weather department has advised people in areas likely to experience thunderstorms and strong winds to remain cautious. Residents should avoid taking shelter under trees or near weak structures during lightning and heavy rain.

Motorists and other travellers have been urged to follow weather updates and exercise caution, particularly during evening and nighttime showers, when reduced visibility and waterlogging could disrupt road traffic.
