New Delhi, 17 September (H.S.): The domestic equity market was seen trading firmly amid volatility during early trading on Thursday. The session had begun on a weak note, but buying interest emerged soon after the market opened, enabling both the Sensex and Nifty to recover and move into positive territory. However, selling pressure subsequently resurfaced, causing both benchmark indices to pare some of their gains. After 10 a.m., the Sensex was trading with a gain of 0.22 per cent, while the Nifty was up 0.34 per cent.

The BSE Sensex opened at 74,182.62, down 153.83 points, or 0.21 per cent. Soon after trading commenced, buyers stepped in with sustained purchases, helping the index recover and move into the green. Supported by continued buying, the Sensex climbed more than 350 points from its opening level within the first 20 minutes of trading, touching 74,537.60. Thereafter, profit-booking emerged, leading to a decline in the index. Amid continued buying and selling activity in the market, the Sensex was trading at 74,501.77 after 10 a.m., up 165.32 points, or 0.22 per cent.

Like the Sensex, the NSE Nifty also began the day on a weak note, opening at 23,195.25, down 22.35 points, or 0.10 per cent. After the market opened, strong buying interest pushed the index higher. As buying continued, the Nifty soon jumped more than 105 points from its opening level to touch 23,303.85.

However, the gains could not be sustained for long. Profit-booking at these levels triggered a decline in the index as well. Amid continued buying and selling activity, the Nifty was trading at 23,295.40 after 10 a.m., up 77.80 points, or 0.34 per cent.

So far in the trading session, 2,801 stocks were actively traded in the stock market. Of these, 2,190 shares were trading in positive territory with gains, while 611 shares were trading in the red with losses. Similarly, of the 30 stocks comprising the Sensex, 20 were trading in the green on the back of buying support, while 10 were trading in the red amid selling pressure. Among the 50 Nifty constituents, 35 stocks were trading in positive territory and 15 in negative territory.

After 10 a.m., shares of some of the major companies in the stock market, including Eternal, Shriram Finance, Bajaj Finance, Bharat Electronics and HDFC Life, were trading with gains ranging from 1.50 per cent to 2.16 per cent. On the other hand, shares of ONGC, HCL Technologies, HDFC Bank, TCS and Coal India were trading lower, with declines ranging from 0.52 per cent to 1.49 per cent.

In the previous trading session on Wednesday, the Sensex had closed at 74,336.45, gaining 332.63 points, or 0.45 per cent. The Nifty, meanwhile, ended Wednesday’s session at 23,217.60, registering a gain of 99 points, or 0.43 per cent.
