Thiruvananthapuram, 17 September (H.S.): Renowned Kerala architect G. Gopalakrishnan, who designed and supervised the construction of more than 100 mosques, died following age-related ailments. He was 90.

Popularly known as the ‘Mosqueman’ for his extensive contribution to mosque architecture, Gopalakrishnan designed several prominent places of worship in Kerala and elsewhere. His work combined distinctive architectural styles with the practical and cultural requirements of religious congregations.

Gopalakrishnan’s association with mosque construction began in 1961 when he joined his father, Govindan, a building contractor, in renovating the Palayam mosque, which then had a tiled roof.

He later contributed to the construction and redesign of several landmark mosques, including Beemapally, Kaduvapally and Alamcode mosque. He also designed a mosque in Karunagappally modelled on the Taj Mahal.

One of his most notable projects was the renovation of the Vavar mosque at Erumeli, widely regarded as a symbol of religious harmony. He designed the structure to accommodate both Muslim worshippers arriving for prayers and Ayyappa devotees participating in the traditional Petta Thullal ritual.

Gopalakrishnan’s architectural work was not confined to mosques. He also designed Christian churches and Hindu temples, reflecting his familiarity with diverse religious traditions and architectural forms.

The Chandanapally St George Orthodox Church, designed in the style of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, is among his most celebrated works outside mosque architecture. He received several honours for his contribution to the design and construction of religious buildings.

Gopalakrishnan was also the author of the acclaimed Malayalam book Njan Kanda Quran (The Quran I Saw). The book, based on his study and understanding of religion, attracted considerable attention and appreciation.

His funeral will be held at the Santhikavadam crematorium in Thycaud at 12.30 pm on Thursday.
