New Delhi/Tokyo, 25 August (H.S.): Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday held discussions with representatives of leading Japanese financial and investment institutions on strengthening long-term capital flows and investment partnerships and expanding Japanese participation in India's growth journey.
In a post on X, Goyal said he began the second day of his visit to Tokyo with a roundtable breakfast meeting with representatives of leading foreign institutional investors (FIIs). The discussions covered India's evolving investment landscape, progress in improving the ease of doing business and emerging opportunities across various sectors. He also reiterated India's commitment to creating an investor-friendly environment and building strong, enduring partnerships for shared growth.
Senior representatives from Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), Development Bank of Japan (DBJ), Mizuho, Morgan Stanley, Nomura and Nippon Life attended the meeting. The participants exchanged views on India's economic prospects, emerging investment opportunities and ways to further facilitate Japanese institutional investment in the country.
Goyal highlighted the resilience of the Indian economy during the meeting. He said that despite global uncertainties, India's economy grew by 7.7 per cent last year and the country was working towards becoming a $30 trillion economy by 2047. He also highlighted India's robust banking sector, adequate capitalisation and low levels of non-performing assets, along with the country's expanding middle class and rising disposable incomes.
The minister said significant opportunities exist for Japanese companies in sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), data centres, renewable energy, green hydrogen, advanced manufacturing and digital infrastructure.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement, “Japanese financial institutions shared their growing engagement with India and expressed strong confidence in the country's long-term growth prospects.”
In another post on X, Goyal said he also met Yasuhiko Hashimoto, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, along with senior officials of the company. Goyal said the discussions focused on opportunities to further strengthen cooperation in robotics, hydrogen technology and heavy engineering.
He said that given India's expanding infrastructure requirements and its green energy ambitions, there is considerable scope for deeper collaboration with leading Japanese companies.
