New Delhi, 25 August (H.S.):

The Central government has sought two years to implement retrospectively the Supreme Court’s March 11 judgment in the creamy layer matter. The government has said that the ruling could have far-reaching implications for government recruitment, service matters, cadre allocation, seniority, admissions to higher educational institutions and 18 states and Union Territories.

The Centre has filed a petition before the Supreme Court seeking clarification of its March 11 judgment, stating that its implementation could have a wide-ranging impact. According to the government, the ruling could potentially result in candidates being classified as belonging to the non-creamy layer even when their parents have higher incomes.

The government has sought a two-year period to implement the judgment, saying that the additional time would be required to complete the necessary process for determining equivalence of the affected posts and addressing the various administrative implications arising from the ruling.
