Dabholkar murder: Bombay HC stayed capital punishment

Mumbai, 18 Aug

(HS): The Bombay High Court has granted bail to the main accused in Social

Worker Narendra Dabholkar murder case Sachin Andure and also stayed the

punishment awarded to him of handing till death. The orders were pronounced on

Tuesday by the bench consisting Justice Sarang Kotwal and Justice Ranjitsinh

Bhosale.

Pune Sessions

Court had awarded the capital punishment to Andure in 2013 in the case of

Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmools Samiti Founder Narendra Dabholkar. The case

awaiting justice has taken a new twist with the decision of the Bombay High

Court. Earlier another accused in the case Sharad Kalaskar was granted bail by

the Bombay High Court in April 2026, who was held guilty by the Pune Sessions

Court.

Dabholkar, who

was fighting against superstitions, was killed by two motorcycle riders on

August 20, 2013 in Pune when he was on a morning walk. The attackers fired

bullets on Dabholkar near Omkareshwar region near Ramji Shinde Bridge in Pune.

Dabhokar died in the attack which disturbed entire Maharashtra.

During the

investigation Sachin Andure and Sharad Kalaskar were held guilty and a Special Court

in Pune has held them guilty and had awarded life imprisonment and a fine of Rs

5 lakh. CBI had called Dr Virendra Sinh Tawde as mastermind of the murder. However

the court released Tawde, Sachin Punalekar and Vikram Bhave for want of

adequate evidence again them.

The

investigation into the kingpin behind Dabholkar’ murder remain a mystery.
