Mumbai, 16 August (H.S.): Four members of a naval family, including a sailor, his wife and their two young children, were found dead at their residence in Navy Nagar in Colaba, Mumbai, triggering shock in the area.

The children were aged two months and three years, respectively. Navy Nagar police recovered all four bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination as an investigation into the incident got underway.

According to a police official familiar with the investigation, the bodies were recovered from a naval quarter in Navy Nagar on Saturday. The sailor is suspected to have died by suicide, while the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two children remain unclear.

Police are examining the possibility that the children may have died after being poisoned. However, investigators have stressed that the exact cause and circumstances of the deaths can be established only after the post-mortem examination and forensic reports are received.

Forensic teams collected relevant evidence from the scene, while investigators are recording statements from family members, neighbours and other people connected to the family to reconstruct the events leading up to the incident.

The Indian Navy described the incident as tragic and said that a naval personnel and his family were found dead at their residence in Navy Nagar on August 15.

The Navy said the police are investigating the matter and that it is extending all possible assistance and cooperation to the authorities during the probe.
