New Delhi, 11 August (H.S.): The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Central Government, the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) while hearing a petition related to the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP). A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant directed that the matter be listed for further hearing on September 10.

The petition, filed by advocate Raja Choudhary, seeks an investigation into the activities of the Cockroach Janata Party and the alleged commercial and social-media use of oral observations made by judges and lawyers during court proceedings.

The petition referred to a hearing held on May 15, during which the Chief Justice had used the term “cockroach” in an observation. It alleged that portions of the courtroom exchange were selectively edited and subsequently circulated on social media as political symbols, memes and viral content for commercial purposes.

The petitioner has also sought a CBI investigation into the alleged existence of a large number of fake lawyers and individuals possessing fraudulent law degrees.
