Zagreb, 03 July (H.S.):

World Chess Champion D. Gukesh delivered an impressive performance on Thursday, defeating Dutch Grandmaster Anish Giri on the second day of the Zagreb Grand Chess Tour to climb into joint second place in the standings. Meanwhile, French Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja maintained his lead at the top after another dominant display.

Firouzja has accumulated 10 points from a possible 12, opening up a three-point advantage over the chasing pack. Germany's Vincent Keymer, France's Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Romania's Bogdan-Daniel Deac, and India's D. Gukesh are all tied for second place with seven points each.

India's R. Praggnanandhaa, Anish Giri of the Netherlands, and Uzbekistan's Nodirbek Abdusattorov follow closely with 6.5 points. Croatia's Ivan Saric and Dutch Grandmaster Jorden van Foreest remain at the bottom of the standings with two points each.

Gukesh produced a commanding display against Giri while playing with the white pieces. Employing the Ruy Lopez Exchange Variation, the Indian star kept his opponent under pressure from the opening. Giri soon drifted out of his preparation, allowing Gukesh to launch sustained attacks against the Dutch player's king.

After winning the exchange, Gukesh maintained complete control and converted his advantage with precision to register a convincing victory.

Praggnanandhaa endured a mixed day. He began strongly by defeating Jorden van Foreest but later suffered defeats against Nodirbek Abdusattorov and tournament leader Alireza Firouzja.

Against Firouzja, Praggnanandhaa had steered the game towards what appeared to be a drawable endgame. However, a costly mistake in the closing stages enabled the French Grandmaster to seize victory.

Gukesh's day had begun with an unexpected defeat to Romania's Bogdan-Daniel Deac. He responded emphatically by defeating Jorden van Foreest and Anish Giri in consecutive rounds to stage an impressive comeback.

Three rounds remain in the rapid section of the tournament. Although Firouzja currently holds a comfortable lead in the title race, the eventual champion will be decided after the 18 blitz games that will conclude the prestigious event.
