Lucknow, 28 July (HS): Mayawati, the president of the

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), hailed the hold on the intended destruction of 38

buildings at Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur on Tuesday and encouraged

the government to consider regularising structures that do not fulfill

construction standards rather than adopting stern demolition action.

In a post on X in Hindi, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister stated that

the decision to suspend the Rampur Development Authority's demolition move was

reasonable and should be praised. The RDA had ordered the demolition of 38

academic buildings at the institution, which was founded by the family trust of

Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan in memory of freedom hero Mohammad

Ali Jauhar, due to charges that they lacked authorized building plans.

Mayawati stated that the government should implement a

policy of taking the required steps to bring such institutions into conformity,

including other educational institutes in Uttar Pradesh that may have failed to

completely follow building rules. She stated that such an approach would ensure

that pupils' education was not hindered and hoped that the government would

evaluate the issue in the public interest.

Her words came a day after the Moradabad Divisional Commissioner's Court gave

the university interim relief, postponing the planned destruction until the

final hearing in the case. According to Divisional Commissioner Anjaneya Kumar

Singh, the stay was granted following an application by the university's

lawyer. He noted that a final judgment will be made after hearing from all

parties and reviewing the records.
