Kolkata, 02 July (H.S.) : Tension prevailed outside the Barasat court on Thursday after eggs were hurled at the police vehicle carrying arrested Trinamool Congress councillor Debraj Chakraborty. While the councillor escaped unhurt, several eggs struck the police vehicle and the uniforms of police personnel deployed at the spot.
Police had made elaborate security arrangements after learning that Debraj Chakraborty, a councillor of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, would be produced before the Barasat court. A large crowd had gathered outside the court premises, with some people reportedly waiting with eggs.
As soon as the police vehicle entered the court complex, several eggs were thrown at it. The vehicle's windows had been kept shut, allowing police personnel to escort Chakraborty safely into the courtroom. However, multiple eggs hit the bonnet and roof of the vehicle, while some also splattered on the uniforms of police officers.
Amid the commotion, Chakraborty, wearing a cap, was escorted into the court under heavy police protection. According to officials, the security deployment was strengthened to prevent any untoward incident.
The incident comes against the backdrop of similar egg-throwing protests targeting several Trinamool Congress leaders in the post-election period. The heavy security arrangements outside the court also drew criticism from a section of lawyers present at the premises.
Meanwhile, a public interest litigation (PIL) concerning such egg-throwing incidents is already pending before the Calcutta High Court. During a hearing earlier this week, a Division Bench headed by the Acting Chief Justice sought a report from the West Bengal government on the steps being taken to prevent such incidents.
Debraj Chakraborty's wife, singer and former Trinamool MLA Aditi Munshi, is also under investigation. Police are probing allegations that the couple transferred assets worth nearly ₹100 crore in the names of relatives and associates ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
Investigators have accused the couple of possessing disproportionate assets, concealing properties, and being involved in alleged money laundering. Aditi Munshi has also been accused of underreporting her assets in her election affidavit. The investigation into the financial irregularities is continuing.
