Hooghly, July 16 (HS): West Bengal Minister Sumana Sarkar on Wednesday visited the Ganga erosion-affected area at Kuntighat Ramnagar in Hooghly district to assess the situation and interact with local residents affected by the riverbank erosion.

During the visit, the minister listened to the grievances of residents and assured them that the state government would take immediate steps to prevent further erosion and protect their homes and livelihoods.

She said that people in the area have been living under constant fear due to the continuing riverbank erosion. Considering the seriousness of the situation, the government has already sanctioned ₹3,974,464 (approximately ₹39.74 lakh) for anti-erosion measures.

According to the minister, work to strengthen the vulnerable riverbank will begin shortly to ensure the safety of local residents and safeguard their properties.

Addressing the people, Sumana Sarkar said, “As your daughter, I will always stand by you. Whatever is necessary for the welfare of the people of this area will be done without delay.”

The minister's assurance brought a sense of relief among local residents, who expressed hope that the anti-erosion project would begin soon and provide a long-term solution to the recurring problem.
