Kozhikode, 08 June (H.S.): Authorities in Kozhikode and Kasaragod districts have declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Tuesday following the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Red Alert warning and the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall across northern Kerala.
District Collectors of both districts announced the closure in view of the continuing spell of intense monsoon rains that have already caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas. Officials said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students, teachers and staff, with forecasts indicating that heavy rain accompanied by strong winds is likely to persist over the next few days.
The holiday will apply to all schools, colleges, madrassas, tuition centres and professional educational institutions in the two districts. Anganwadis will also remain closed as part of the precautionary measures.
Authorities noted that several parts of Kozhikode and Kasaragod have been experiencing persistent rainfall, leading to flooding of roads, water accumulation in residential areas and disruptions to normal life. With the southwest monsoon strengthening over Kerala, disaster management officials have advised residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in areas vulnerable to flooding, landslides and falling trees.
The district administrations have also directed local authorities to closely monitor weather conditions and take immediate action in the event of any emergency. Emergency response teams have been kept on alert, while people living near rivers, streams and hilly regions have been urged to follow official advisories.
Officials clarified that the holiday applies only to educational institutions. University examinations, Public Service Commission (PSC) examinations and other scheduled public examinations will be conducted as planned without any change in timetable.
The IMD has forecast continued heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts of Kerala, with northern districts expected to bear the brunt of the ongoing monsoon activity. Authorities have urged the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins and district administration announcements.
