Chandigarh, 08 June (H.S.): Cab drivers in

Chandigarh staged a massive protest at the Sector-25 Rally Ground on Monday,

demanding a revision in fare rates and immediate action on issues affecting

their livelihood. During the demonstration, the drivers carried out a symbolic

funeral procession against the administration and raised slogans to highlight

their grievances.

A large number of cab drivers participated in the

protest and warned that if their demands were not addressed promptly, they

would launch a large-scale strike on June 16. The protesters said rising

inflation, increasing fuel prices and higher vehicle maintenance costs have

severely impacted their earnings, making it difficult for them to support their

families.

Addressing the gathering, the drivers alleged that

despite repeatedly informing the administration about their problems, no

concrete solution has been provided so far. They warned that the agitation

would be intensified if their concerns continued to be ignored.

The cab drivers demanded that the minimum fare be

increased to ₹35 per kilometre. According to them, the current fare structure

is outdated and no longer viable under present economic conditions. Union

president Amandeep said the costs of CNG, petrol, diesel, vehicle insurance and

spare parts have increased significantly over the years, while fare rates have

remained unchanged. As a result, many drivers are struggling to repay vehicle

loans and meet daily expenses.

During the protest, the drivers also levelled serious

allegations against app-based cab companies. They claimed that private vehicles

are being operated as commercial taxis in violation of regulations, affecting

the livelihood of legally registered commercial drivers. According to the

protesters, the unchecked operation of such vehicles has created unfair

competition and reduced income opportunities for licensed cab operators.

The protesting drivers urged the Chandigarh

administration to intervene and address their concerns at the earliest. They

maintained that the issue is not only related to fare revision but also to

ensuring fair competition and protecting the interests of thousands of drivers

dependent on the transport sector for their livelihood.

The drivers reiterated that if no positive decision is taken soon, they will

go ahead with their proposed strike on June 16.
