Thiruvananthapuram, 18 June (H.S.) :The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has revised its rainfall warning for Kerala, issuing an Orange Alert for Ernakulam and Thrissur districts amid forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.
According to the IMD, these districts are likely to receive rainfall ranging between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within a 24-hour period, raising concerns over flooding, waterlogging, and weather-related disruptions.
In addition to the Orange Alert, a Yellow Alert has been issued for six districts — Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Kozhikode — indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall at isolated locations.
Meteorologists have also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph in some areas. The intensified southwest monsoon activity is expected to bring widespread rain across central Kerala and parts of the northern districts.
State disaster management authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and strictly follow official advisories. People living in landslide-prone and hilly regions have been asked to stay alert and move to safer locations if instructed by local authorities. Areas susceptible to landslides, mudslides, and flash floods are being closely monitored.
Residents living along riverbanks and in downstream regions of dams have also been advised to take precautionary measures and relocate temporarily if necessary. Authorities cautioned that sudden rises in water levels could pose significant risks during periods of intense rainfall.
The public has been strongly advised against crossing flooded rivers, entering water bodies for bathing, fishing, or any other activities during the adverse weather conditions. Emergency response teams and district administrations have been placed on alert to respond to any rain-related incidents.
Officials have urged people to stay updated through official weather bulletins and follow safety instructions as Kerala braces for another spell of heavy monsoon rainfall.
