Guwahati, 17 June (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday paid homage to Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala on his birth anniversary, stating that the legendary artist and freedom fighter played a defining role in shaping Assam’s modern cultural consciousness through his pioneering contributions to literature, music, theatre and cinema.

Sharing a message on social media platform X, the Chief Minister described Agarwala as a visionary whose influence continues to resonate across generations. He noted that the cultural icon laid the foundation of Assamese cinema with the release of Joymoti in 1935 and enriched Assamese society as a playwright, poet and composer.

Sarma said the timeless appeal of Jyoti Sangeet reflects Agarwala’s artistic excellence and revolutionary spirit. According to the Chief Minister, Agarwala’s work went beyond artistic expression and significantly contributed to the formation of Assam’s cultural identity.

Born on June 17, 1903, at Tamulbari Tea Estate in present-day Dibrugarh district, Jyotiprasad Agarwala is regarded as one of the foremost architects of modern Assamese culture. A multifaceted personality, he excelled as a poet, lyricist, dramatist, filmmaker, composer and freedom fighter, becoming a leading figure in Assam’s cultural renaissance.

A milestone in Assamese cultural history was achieved in 1935 when Agarwala produced, directed and scripted Joymoti, the first Assamese feature film. The landmark production marked the beginning of Assamese cinema and remains an enduring symbol of the state's artistic heritage.

His contribution to music also remains unparalleled. The vast collection of songs known as Jyoti Sangeet continues to inspire people through its blend of patriotism, humanism and lyrical richness.

Alongside his artistic achievements, Agarwala actively participated in India’s freedom movement and used literature and music as powerful tools for social awakening and national consciousness. His birth anniversary is observed every year across Assam through cultural programmes, literary events and commemorative tributes celebrating the enduring legacy of the revered Rupkonwar.----------
