Wayanad, 12 June (H.S.) :
Health authorities in Kerala's Wayanad district are awaiting the results of additional tests on children affected by the Shigella outbreak reported at a school in Sulthan Bathery, as efforts to contain the spread of the bacterial infection continue.
One more child tested positive for Shigella infection on Thursday, taking the total number of confirmed cases linked to Koliyadi School to nine. Officials said the results of tests conducted on more students are expected on Friday.
The outbreak has prompted intensified surveillance and preventive measures across the district. According to health department data, 502 students from the school have sought medical treatment after developing symptoms associated with the infection. Of these, 47 children remain hospitalised, while the rest are under observation or have recovered.
To prevent further spread of the disease through close contact, authorities have declared a holiday for schools in three panchayats and the Sulthan Bathery Municipality. Health officials have also advised parents to avoid taking children to public gatherings and unnecessary outings until the situation is brought under control.
Meanwhile, a laboratory analysis of water samples collected from a well on the school premises has revealed severe bacterial contamination. The report found the water to be unsafe and unfit for use under any circumstances.
The findings have strengthened suspicions that contaminated well water may be the source of the outbreak. Health officials are continuing investigations to determine the exact cause of the infections and assess the extent of contamination.
As a precautionary measure, the health department and local self-government bodies have begun chlorinating wells within the school campus and nearby areas. Additional public health measures, including water quality monitoring and awareness campaigns, are also underway.
Authorities have urged residents to maintain strict hygiene standards, consume only safe drinking water and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as diarrhoea, fever, vomiting or abdominal pain develop. The district administration said all necessary steps are being taken to prevent further infections and ensure the safety of students and residents.
