Thiruvananthapuram, 07 May (H.S):Discussions on Cabinet formation within the United Democratic Front (UDF) have gathered pace, with constituent parties intensifying efforts to secure their share of ministerial positions in the proposed government. After the Indian Union Muslim League asserted its claim for key portfolios, the Kerala Congress (Joseph faction) has now formally staked claim for two ministerial berths in the new Cabinet.
Senior Kerala Congress leader P.J. Joseph on Thursday said the party would demand two ministerial positions along with the post of Chief Whip in the new government. Speaking to reporters in Thodupuzha before leaving for Thiruvananthapuram, Joseph said the party leadership was actively participating in the ongoing negotiations within the UDF.
“We are heading to Thiruvananthapuram as the presence of party leaders is required for the discussions,” Joseph said. When asked whom the party would support for the Chief Minister’s post, he said the leadership would express its opinion at the appropriate time. “It is not possible to comment on that now,” he added.
The Kerala Congress (Joseph faction), which remains an influential ally within the UDF, is believed to be seeking greater representation in the government following the coalition’s electoral performance. Party leaders maintain that their political contribution and regional influence justify the demand for enhanced representation in the Cabinet.
The demand has also triggered discussions within political circles over who could become the party’s second minister if the Congress agrees to allot two berths. While senior leader Mons Joseph is widely seen as a frontrunner for a Cabinet position, speculation has begun over the identity of the second possible nominee from the party.
However, it remains unclear whether the Congress leadership will accommodate the Kerala Congress demand for two ministerial posts, as several UDF allies are simultaneously pressing for greater representation in the ministry. Negotiations among coalition partners are expected to continue over the coming days as the UDF moves closer to finalising the structure of the new government.
