Gaborone World Athletics Relays 2026: Teams Qualify for Budapest and Beijing Showpieces as Botswana Make History

Gaborone, 04 May (H.S.): The World Athletics Relays 2026 in Gaborone produced a flurry of qualification milestones and record‑breaking performances over the weekend, with several nations securing their places in the upcoming World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest and the World Athletics Championships in Beijing, while the host nation Botswana scripted a historic chapter in sprint‑relay lore.

First qualifiers for Budapest 2026

World Athletics announced on Monday that the first batch of relay teams had sealed their spots for the World Athletics Ultimate Championship 2026 in Budapest, which will be held from 11 to 13 September. The mixed 4×100m and mixed 4×400m relay finals in Gaborone served as the primary qualification window for these events.

In the mixed 4×100m relay, the top six teams – Canada, Germany, Jamaica, Nigeria, Spain and the United States – qualified directly for Budapest.

In the mixed 4×400m relay, the qualifiers were Great Britain, Italy, Jamaica, Kenya, Spain and the United States, who finished in the top six and booked their places in the Hungarian capital.

Record‑breaking runs in the mixed relays

The mixed 4×100m race witnessed a sensational display by Jamaica, whose quartet clocked 39.62 seconds to improve their own world record, finising ahead of Canada, who came second.

In the mixed 4×400m, the United States set a new competition record of 3:07.47, while Jamaica secured a national‑record second place in 3:08.24, underlining the intense standard of the two‑day relay festival.

Beijing 2027 qualification pathway

Beyond Budapest, the Gaborone event also served as a key route into the World Athletics Championships 2027 in Beijing. A total of 72 relay teams earned direct qualification to the Chinese capital through the two‑day programme.

On Saturday, 48 teams booked their spots, and the remaining 24 quota places were filled on Sunday, following the conclusion of the final relay races and the publication of the corresponding results.

Botswana’s landmark moment

The host nation delivered the most electrifying moment of the event when the Botswana men’s 4×400m relay team stormed to victory in the final, clocking 2:54.47.

The time not only set a new championship record but also stands as the third‑fastest 4×400m relay time in history, edging the country’s position among the all‑time great relay nations.

Other key results

Beyond the mixed‑relay and men’s 4×400m headline events, several nations secured notable podium finishes:

Men’s 4×100m relay: The United States won in 37.43 seconds, the fastest time in the world this season, with South Africa (37.49) and Germany (37.76) close behind.

Women’s 4×100m relay: Jamaica captured gold in 42.00 seconds, reaffirming their status as the leading women’s sprint‑realy nation.

Women’s 4×400m relay: Norway stunned the field with a national‑record 3:20.96 to clinch an unexpected gold, marking one of the most striking performances of the weekend.

Final spots to be decided by rankings

The remaining slots – two teams each in the mixed‑relay disciplines and four teams in each of the other relay events – will be allocated at the end of the World Athletics‑set qualification window, with the final allocations based on world rankings.

Overall, the Gaborone Relays not only confirmed the credentials of established powerhouses but also elevated host Botswana into the global sprint‑relay elite, setting a high‑octane tone for the forthcoming World Athletics showpieces in Budapest and Beijing.
