Guwahati, 30 May (HS): In a move aimed at strengthening urban sanitation and enhancing the city's aesthetic appeal, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has decided to reintroduce a user fee for household garbage collection services. The announcement was made by GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania during a press conference held on Saturday.

Addressing the media, the Mayor said that every household in Guwahati will now have to pay a monthly garbage collection fee of ₹30. The press conference was also attended by GMC Commissioner Chinmoy Prakash Phukan and senior official Smita Roy. The civic body had been providing the service free of cost until recently.

According to the Mayor, the decision has been taken to improve waste management practices and ensure a cleaner and more efficient sanitation system across the city. He urged residents to cooperate with the municipal authorities in maintaining cleanliness and preserving the beauty of Guwahati.

As part of a broader beautification initiative, the Mayor also appealed to citizens to use pigeon-flower themed colours around their homes and premises. He further announced the launch of a new theme song for garbage collection vehicles operating in the city.

While the decision has drawn mixed reactions from sections of residents, GMC officials maintained that the fee is necessary to sustain better waste management services and improve overall urban cleanliness. However, the Mayor did not clarify what action would be taken against private garbage collectors who, in some localities, are reportedly charging households up to ₹200 per month for waste collection services.------------
